Legitimate Insanity

Todd Akin is not the problem. He is the symptom. The disease is the conservative American obsession with abortion, sexual violence, reproductive health, and equal rights. Most Americans see these issues as important and essential elements of a healthy society. “Pro-Life” Americans see these issues as one issue: the unborn, and how they may be protected from the feminist inspired evils of their mothers desires and intentions. Rape in the pro-life community is not a crime to be prosecuted and an evil to be fought and condemned: it is an opportunity to bring “new life” into the world. In the pro-life mind, there is no such thing as sexual violence. If a woman is raped it is not something to be talked about or dealt with. It is a chance to educate that poor, slutty woman about the consequences of “her” actions. Former Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle summed up this point of view quite succinctly:

“I think that two wrongs don’t make a right… look for some alternatives…[turn] a lemon situation into lemonade.”

Life is a means unto itself, that is, potential life. Once that life has entered the world the shame begins: shame that this life was brought into the world by a single mother, shame that it is poor or in need of welfare services, shame that it will be going to a godless public school, and if it is unfortunate to be born a female, shame on it for needing reproductive health services along with a natural desire for sexual fulfillment. Once that life is shepherded into the world by the pro-life Pretorian Guard it is immediately abandoned as yet another leech upon the liberty and the wealth of “job creating” and “hard working” Americans. And God help you if you are born anything but white.

In the eyes of the pro-life movement a woman is nothing more than a baby-incubating system at best, and a male-controlled sexual object at worst. Her sexuality is not her own. Hence the idea of “legitimate rape”.

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Akin is only the most recent pro-life zealot to put forth this repugnant idea. “Legitimate rape” is a conservative idea that is used as a tool against women who have the audacity to be attacked by a man. The man is never at fault, at least not past the basic taboo against violence. He is merely acting out on his “natural” male inclinations. On the other hand, if a woman is raped it is only because she failed at some level. No “good” woman will ever be in a situation where she will be raped. No “good” woman is ever out of sight of a protective male authority figure, be it a father, brother, platonic boyfriend, or possessive husband. And remember, once she is married, a woman cannot be raped, at least by the man who is most likely to rape her: her husband.

These twisted views of sexual violence are being promoted as a new legal standard for all women. Akin authored and sponsored HR 3, co-sponsored by newly minted Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan, a bill that would redefine rape in a much more restrictive sense, only recognize rape as something that happens in a dark alley against a somehow “deserving” woman, and goes out of its way to protect the REAL victim of the assault: the unborn child. Yes, the real crime here is committed by the misguided little woman who wants to abort the fetus forcibly put into her by a man who decided he wanted to violate her. Remember, “life” and all that. No thought is given to the life of the woman who is actually alive and legally protected by the Constitution and US laws. A woman is worth less than a bundle of cells or a rice grain sized fetus in the pro-life world. And a newly born child immediately loses its holy aura and becomes yet another sinner and potential violator of the “rights” of the unborn. The fetus becomes a super-citizen: it has all the rights that human beings should have, and more besides. It has the “right” to live at the expense of its own mother.

Fundamentalist Christianity is at the heart of this macabre fetal recreation of the crucifixion: the woman is impregnated by the legitimizing paternal force, be it the husband or the rapist, and the highest ideal of the mother after this event is to die in the service of giving life to the fetus. Woman who die giving birth are called “heroes” and “true mothers” and their fates are held up as the ultimate feminine ideal. Think of that, a woman’s worth is defined by her ability to die for a baby that she may not even have wanted! What does that mean for the women whose pregnancies end in a miscarriage? Has she “failed” as a women then? Sadly, this is inevitably the case: if your only worth as a human being is as a living breathing nest for the holy fetus, then what else do you have to live for? Life itself becomes meaningless, only an end, and for a woman life only has meaning as far as the paternal authorities define and allow for. And invariably, they will define that life as subordinate to the male concern of “being fruitful” and filling the Earth with more and more and more and more life. God’s will be done, I suppose.

This, I believe, is legitimate insanity.

My word! I had heard a few snippets about some of the sexist policies being spouted, but this is the first time I’ve seen them nutted out this way. I can’t possibly describe the depth of my horror! It’s appalling in this day and age that anyone can think it’s even acceptable to speak this kind of drivel aloud! Nevermind actually base a political campaign on it! They do realise women vote, right? Or maybe they don’t…

I couldn’t ever imagine this type of discussion happening in Australia. We had one political leader who was a bit overtly Christian/sexist against women, and it seems that recently someone has reminded him that women DO vote, and he’s hauled his policies right back, and is actually the proponent of the best paid maternity leave scheme (don’t even get me started on the one we have and how sexist it is…). But then Australia is a far less religious society than America, and perhaps that’s the difference. Religion and politics seem to be more clearly separated here.

sometimes I really regret being born in this country. There is so much inequality, and religious filth going on. It is really disheartening. I do not know how ANY women vote for these idiots.

  2. The Women of America have a very BIG problem facing them if Romney and Ryan are elected to run our government in the next election. Let there be no doubt that Romney and Ryan have as a secret agenda a plan to make abortions illegal when they take over our government if they win the election. Don’t think for a second that just because you got Roe versus Wade that legalizes abortion that you have nothing to worry about. I’ve got news for you. Romney and Ryan already have a plan to over turn Roe versus Wade. And if Romney and Ryan win the next election and the Republicans win control of the Senate and the House then surely you will see this plan initiated and passed into law. The Romney and Republican plan is to pass a law stating that life begins at conception. Then Romney and the Republicans plan on getting a law passed that states that a fetus being declared a life is protected under the constitution and cannot have it’s life ended. Once signed into law the Republican Supreme Court will surely uphold the law. Then the Republicans will use filibusters in the Senate to prevent anyone from over turning this new no more abortion law. This law will be on the books for many many years. Women will have to go back to the days of getting backroom abortions by inexperienced people which will endanger their lives. Women will have to bear children that they can’t afford or want. All of this will surely happen if Romney becomes president. Romney and Ryan will also surely cut all federal funding for Planned Parenthood as well as cutting many other benefits that the poor and the middle class need to help them survive. But Romney and Ryan will do everything they can to make the rich richer as they will surely extend the Bush tax cuts for the Rich and cut other taxes for the rich. This election is more than just about the economy. It’s about your rights, your liberties, your chance for equality, your health, your safety, your life. Read http://www.mybetteramericaplan.com to see how Romney and the Republicans are bad for America in many ways and how President Obama has done a lot of good for America. Some of you may be disappointed in some way about President Obama but you’ll be a whole lot unhappier if Romney and Ryan win the election.
To hear Rep. Akin make the ridiculous remark that women who are raped cannot become pregnant shows how ignorant the Republicans can be. This article shows how disgusting the some of the Republicans can be. I would only hope that the people wise up to the idiotic thinking of some of these Republicans and don’t vote for them. It’s one thing to be against high deficit spending. But to elect someone to government just because they are against high deficits when many other things about their character is scary is not right. From Romney to Ryan to Akin and many other Republicans there is too much to that is not right about these people to put them in public office. However the fact that 32,000 women a year have babies from being raped is even more disgusting and horrifying. This means that many more thousands of women are raped every year. We have to try in some way to make it so that many less women are not raped every year. One way to do this is to make it a requirement that every women in America is taught self defense in school and throughout life against rape. Then by the time women are 15 they should know karate and especially where the weak spots of a are and how to attack them. Then all children should be interviewed alone to see if family or other people are sexually or physically abusing them.

Women better rush to take advantage of Planned Parenthood services because if Romney is elected there goes most of the services of Planned Parenthood. Also Planned parenthood will have to close many clinics which will make women wait in loooooong lines to get services if they can even get service. Another BIG problem women are going to have is that if Romney is elected then he and the Republicans will make abortions illegal. Women across America will have to be burden with children they can’t afford unless they want to put their lives on the line to get backroom abortions by inexperienced people if they can find one. Then if they have the child then they will have to put up a very rough life as Romney, Ryan, and the Republicans do all their best to cut benefits for the needy in any and every way that they can so that they can give tax breaks to the rich. But don’t worry ladies, Romney says he’ll make your life easier with a job. Yea right! Then the job Romney will create if he does create one will probably be a low paying job that you are going to have to totally rely on to survive because Romney and Ryan will cut benefits of all kinds because Romney’s priorities is to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich and give other tax cuts for the rich. The thing is that Romney won’t tell us his economic plan that creates jobs except to say tax cuts for the rich and getting rid of Obamacare is going to create jobs. Voodoonomics tax cuts for the rich haven’t created any jobs for us since the days of Reagan. It’s just a scam to make the rich richer and a scam to get rich people to stop helping people that they don’t want to help anymore. Folks, this election is about much more than the weekly job numbers. It’s about your rights, equality, fairness, equal pay, voting rights, a right to an abortion, getting rid of voodoonomics, ending tax cuts for the rich, saving our environment, ability to get health care, and a better life for all of us and not just for the rich. America is better off than it was four years ago when America was in the mist of a serious Recession that President Obama is getting us out of. It takes a while to recover from this Recession that was on the verge of becoming America’s worst Depression. We are on the road to recovery so why do we want to bring back voodoonomics.

Thank you for commenting. I am going to have to parse this whole thing and respond with a well thought out comment of my own

Life is a lot easier and less stressful if you follow God’s rules, not man’s rules. These people don’t appear to follow and rules. It’s anything goes, just to pick up a vote. I’m 69, seen a few elections, and these folks are down right scary.
